Biocuration Awards

Each year, the ISB will give two Excellence in Biocuration Career Awards to people who have made sustained contributions to the field of biocuration. Also an award is given for Exceptional Contributions to Biocuration biennial.

These awards will be decided following a vote by ISB members.


In 2023, the ISB gave out three awards:

  1. Excellence in Biocuration Early Career Award.
  2. Excellence in Biocuration Advanced Career Award.
  3. Exceptional Contributions to Biocuration – Lifetime Achievement Award.

Excellence in Biocuration Early Career Award

The Early Career Award recognizes biocurators who have been involved in a biocuration-relevant field for less than 7 years. The nominees will be in a non-leadership position and will have made sustained contributions to the field of biocuration. The recipient will be required to present a 15 minute talk at a virtual Biocuration seminar and will be sent a prize of 500 CHF. The nominee does not have to be an active ISB member, as the award will include ISB membership for 1 year.

The nominations will be reviewed by the ISB Award Committee, and then all ISB members will be asked to vote on the nominee who they consider to have demonstrated an outstanding contribution to biocuration.

Excellence in Biocuration Advanced Career Award

The Advanced Career Award recognizes biocurators who have been involved in a biocuration-relevant field for 7 years or more. The nominees will have made sustained contributions to the field of biocuration. The recipient will be required to present a 30 minute talk at an International Biocuration Conference, or at a virtual Biocuration seminar and will be sent a prize of 500 CHF. The nominee does not have to be an active ISB member, as the award will include ISB membership for 1 year.

The nominations will be reviewed by the ISB Award Committee, and then all ISB members will be asked to vote on the nominee who they consider to have demonstrated an outstanding contribution to biocuration.

Biocuration Career Award Requirements for Nomination 

  • Description of the candidate’s contributions (250 word maximum). This description can include any of the following information
    • Contributions to specific datasets/database/ontologies/code etc.
    • Outreach, education, voluntary work that promotes the role of biocurators
    • Mentoring
    • Any contributions to biocuration training or biocuration courses/jamborees/workshops
    • Contribution to new biocuration approaches/processes/systems/procedures/quality assurance
  • List of nominees key publications (Maximum of 5, including research articles, book chapters, monographs, letters, curation SOPs)

 Who can nominate and/or be nominated?

  • Anyone may nominate anyone in the field of biocuration, whether the nominator and/or potential nominee is a member of ISB or not.
  • Individuals can make no more than 1 nomination per award.
  • The nominee should actively involved in editing or creating content as part of a biocuration project and may be providing training or mentoring.
  • Current members of the Executive Committee are not eligible for these awards.
  • Former winners of one of these awards are not eligible for another of these awards.
  • Self-nominations are encouraged.

Exceptional Contributions to Biocuration – Lifetime Achievement Award

This award, given biennial (next award will be in 2023), recognizes a person who has made exceptional contributions to the field of biocuration. The recipient is required to present a 30 minute talk at an International Biocuration Conference, with expenses paid by the ISB, or at a virtual Biocuration seminar. The nominee does not have to be an active ISB member, as the award will include ISB membership for 1 year

Current members of the Executive Committee are not be eligible for this award.
