Workshop overview: Based on the results from the 2020-2021 ISB survey, Biocurators contribute to a wide range of scholarly outputs other than traditional ones such as manuscripts, presentations, and grant funding. Furthermore, biocurators play leadership roles in various capacities that enhance the research process. However, only half of the survey respondents reported being promoted during their careers. The objective of this workshop is to determine ways the ISB can assist Biocurators in our community with career progression.

At this workshop, we will:

  • Provide an overview of and discuss varying job titles and roles of Biocurators
  • Introduce contributor roles and ways we can get better credit and attribution for our work
  • Provide an overview of different ways to track metrics/share scholarly products

Potential outcomes include:

  • Write a report, blog post, editorial, or perspective piece based on our discussion
  • Facilitate a virtual brainstorming session to define standardized job titles and qualifications for biocurators
  • Consider future workshops on topics such as preparing your CV for new hires or established curators or how to best recruit and advertise for biocurator positions
